Jerez
and its surroundings have always been a place where agriculture has played
an important role and where vines have been grown, possibly since the Phoenician
times.
Sherry wine has developed a complete culture and it could be said it has created
a life-style or a way-of-life that has always distinguished Jerez society
among others.
But it is now fair time, so we will not go deeper into historic data.
When
you come to the fair and get into one of the fair booths (no matter whether
you are from Jerez or not), our advise is that you ask for half a bottle of
wine. By doing so, we assure you that all sorrows and troubles will fade away.
The way the wine should be drunk is as it follows: get your bottle, pour some
of the wine into your friends’ glasses and share the moment. Enjoy the company,
sing, dance, laugh or just look at people dancing and delight in doing so.
Sherry wine offers you a wide range of possibilities in which you can have
a good time with it. At noon, you can “warm up” with a glass of oloroso. About
this wine, it is said that it can return you to life. Another possibility
is an amontillado, which goes perfectly with Iberian cured ham (jamón ibérico)
or also with cheese from La Mancha (queso manchego).
Let’s
go now for the King of the fair: the vino fino. Pale-yellow and dry flavour.
It should always be drunk cold. This type of wine is the perfect choice for
sitting around and talking. It is the perfect antidepressant, taking into
account you should not go to far….. The vino fino will run down through your
throat and all sadness and sorrows will disappear. It goes great with all
types of seafood, especially with shrimps and prawns.
At dusk, the best way
to relax is to get into one of the fair booths, take a seat and ask for a
Pedro Ximénez sweet wine, which goes very well with a dessert or an ice cream.
As it can be seen, there is a long wine list. Different options for different
moments. However, at the fair, the King will always be the vino fino.
Let’s put up our glasses and toast from “Jerez2020” to visitors, foreigners
and to the people of Jerez. We wish you a happy Feria del Caballo.
