To see the horses parade through the fair is a tremendous spectacle. The fair
would not be the same without this equestrian show. Jerez has always been
the Andalusian horse capital, and along with the wine and with the Flamenco
art, the horse is one of the symbols of the city.
The horse strolls gracefully through the fair, looking as if it was enjoying
with its dressed up mane. The rider, either in the old or in the country style,
wears his broad-brimmed hat while touching his jacket with his left hand and
grabbing the reins with the other one. The beautiful woman of Jerez sits on
the rump in her gypsy dress. The flounces move with the horse back feet while
she wears her shawl and also carnations on her hair. That is the real picture.
That is the way horses walk through the fair.
Horse
that strolls through the Real
Trotting or walking,
Horse that dances as the gypsies
during daylight without the need of a stage.
Horse from Jerez, Jerezano horse
that thanks to the monks,
you were named Cartujano.

And
what can we say about the horses harnessed to the carriages? Pitters, Landeaus,
Phaerones, large carriages, English style, with Hungarian adornments. The
effort and skills involved in controlling the beauty of these carriages is
incredible. It is a real skill to make these horses and carriages turn around
softly and gently where there is almost no place for the wheels shaft to move.
At the driver’s seat you can see the coachman bringing the horses under
control.
At the fairground, the Real, the local and foreign crowd enjoy and comment
on the beauty of these horses. While doing so, they drink a glass of cold
wine to relax and forget about the high temperatures that are usually invited
to the fair during that time of the year.
Our
advise for those who visit the Horse Fair looking for this spectacle is to
stay at the crossroad Paseo de Las Palmeras and el Real. From that place you
will loose no detail about what is going on.
Come to the Feria del Caballo in Jerez, come to see the
horses, come to drink good wine and enjoy the hospitality of the people from
Jerez.
