As in the rest of Spain, it is almost impossible to understand a fair with
no bulls. However, it would be a nonsense to have a fair without bulls in
our region, as this area hosts many cattle ranches located at both sides of
the "Ruta del Toro" (The Bull Path). In our region, importance is
given to quality and not to quantity, as the cattle ranches located in this
"Ruta del Toro" are the most prestigious among the Spanish ones.
All
cattle ranches have proved to emphasise on quality, but it should be noted
that the root where almost all Spanish cattle ranches come from is the Domecq
one. There are very few of them whose origins are different from Juan Pedro
Domecq Diéz. The list is too long to mention it here, but a few names
among the most important ones in the "Breeding Union" will be given:
Torrestrella, Marqués de Domecq, Jandilla, Martelilla, Fermín
Bohórquez, Carlos Núñez, Torrealta, Núñez
del Cubillo, Ana Romero, Mª Carmen Camacho, Cebada Gago, Sayalero y Brandés
among others.
Besides
the importance of the brave bulls in Jerez, also the "rejoneo" (bullfight
on the horseback) should be mentioned, as it is a very well known art in this
region. Many of the most important bullfighters (on horseback) are from Jerez.
No doubt that there is a name which sounds the most in this discipline, and
that name is: Mr. Alvaro Domecq y Díez. This gentleman from Jerez already
belongs to the History of bullfighting, as he gave importance to this discipline
and included it in the major Spanish fairs. Before that, only one bullfighter
(on horseback) could participate in a normal bullfight, but now these events
have the importance they deserve.
Alvaro
Domecq's cattle ranch must not be forgotten. He has created his own stock
from three different and previous ones. After him, his son Alvaro Domecq Romero
has had great success in the "rejoneo", and now Luis and Antonio
Domecq have received the baton. They are currently great stars, despite their
young age.
The
list of bullfighters from Jerez is a very long one. The name of Jerez goes
together with Rafael de Paula, who is the maximum exponent of artistic bullfighting.
Rafael de Paula is not among the most famous ones in the national lists. However,
he belongs to a different dimension in which his art can be felt as a mixture
of mystery and mysticism.
Some
other names can be mentioned: Juan Antonio Romero "The Cyclone from Jerez",
José Gonzalez Copano, Venturita, Antonio Lozano and Juan Pedro Galán.
Currently, Juan José Padilla is the maximum exponent of our bullfighters,
being included in the most important fairs at a national level. He has been
the bullfighter from Jerez who has been present in more bullfights in a year.
Jerez
and the brave bull go definitely together with the wine and the horses.
